Dear friends and colleagues,

Welcome to the mid-year SAGE Updates.

It has been a big few months: we have appointed three new board members, established two co-design advisory groups, and officially launched the co-design phase of our new Medical Research Institute (MRI) and TAFE accreditation programs. These bespoke gender equity, diversity and inclusion programs will be tailored to meet the unique needs of MRI and TAFE organisations. We are privileged to have some of the leading thinkers from both sectors on our advisory groups.

Consultations also continue for the SAGE Athena Swan program refresh, including with our university and publicly funded research agency members (PFRAs).

We will be hosting two MRI symposia. The first is this week; the second will be held in August. Follow the links below to register.

In broader sector news, Professor Barney Glover AO has been appointed Commissioner of the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC).

Professor Glover brings extensive experience in the tertiary education sector. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, former chair of Universities Australia, and former Vice-Chancellor of Western Sydney University and Charles Darwin University.

During his tenure at Western Sydney University, Professor Glover was a strong supporter of SAGE and the Athena Swan program. Professor Glover has stepped down from his role as Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia and commences his new role on 1 July.

We look forward to working with him to support ATEC’s mission to build a fairer tertiary education system.

Federal Budget, workplace equity and STEMM funding

The 2026-27 Federal Budget delivered a mixed picture for the STEMM sector and for the communities SAGE serves. There are positives, particularly for medical research and for Australian researchers’ access to global funding.

One key challenge remains unresolved: a contracting research funding environment tends to disproportionately disadvantage early-career researchers and those from underrepresented groups. This budget does not fully resolve that pressure.

Horizon funding — opportunities await

The budget included funding for Australia’s association with Horizon Europe. Treaty negotiations concluded last week, putting Australia on track to access the $155b research program, the world’s largest, from next year.  SAGE members are well positioned here, as Horizon funding access includes gender equity prerequisites.

While many SAGE members already meet these requirements, we are developing guidance to help those earlier in their SAGE Athena Swan journey to identify gaps and qualify for Horizon funding.
