Through their newly created Guide, ECU hopes to give their staff and students an overview of inclusive language and to increase their knowledge and awareness of how to use inclusive language at the University.
To ensure that people in these communities and with these identities feel welcome and included in the language used throughout ECU, the guide provides information and examples relating to:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Age
- Disability
- Sex, gender and sexuality
- Race, ethnicity and culture
- Religion and belief
All ECU’s staff and students are expected to uphold the University’s values of integrity, respect, rational inquiry and personal excellence in their personal and professional engagements. Therefore, ECU has a responsibility to ensure all staff and student interactions are respectful, and that they continue to cultivate a safe and supportive environment that is free from discrimination.
Having this resource shows ECU’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and this has been well-received by the wider University community.
