SAGE members came together online this week for an energising and forward-looking session on Australia’s new Workplace Gender Equality Targets.

Following amendments to the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 earlier this year, large employers must select three targets from a menu of 19 options in 2026, and show meaningful progress by 2029. For many SAGE institutions already setting and achieving equity goals, the changes offer an opportunity to build on strong foundations.

WGEA CEO Mary Wooldridge and Executive Manager of Insights and Capability Sam McCurdy, joined SAGE to unpack what the reforms mean in practice, and what will be required. They shared expert advice on:

  • Compliance requirements
  • The purpose of the legislation
  • Target selection
  • How to tailor goals to each organisation’s unique context.

The session drew strong engagement from across the SAGE network, with members asking thoughtful, strategic questions about the path ahead.

Together, we looked beyond compliance, exploring how to align SAGE action plans, reporting frameworks and institutional strategies.
